I’m a professional photographer with my own studio and quite a few years of experience under my belt. I was looking for a third camera to have as backup/gruntuserfriendly/thirdangle. I use religiously my 5D’s and the ever sturdy, ole’ pal-o-mine, 20D (which I may never get rid of.) I wanted a camera that was worth it’s value and easy to use. (I use this mostly for my 3rd hands that are just learning.#
I have been very impressed with the quality of photographs the 40D comes up with when doing outdoor photography. I honestly was quite surprised and cannot say enough good things about it. When it comes to indoor/low light though, #ie. no flash ceremonies), I have found it lacking. I wish it had been designed with more custom function options. Mirror lockup is a godsend.
I love canon and strongly recommend their cameras. I AM a canon girl. What’s that saying? “Owning a nikon doesn’t make you a photographer. It makes you a nikon owner.”
The 40D is a great camera! Just don’t expect it to blow you a way in low light.
An electronics on-line discussion forum contains a story about an elderly woman who wanted a simple camera to take pictures of her grandchildren. When she received a digital camera for Christmas, she looked puzzled for a moment and then asked, “Where do you put in the film?” This humorous example demonstrates how the revolutionary technology of digital cameras may be mystifying for those who have difficulty grasping the concept of a “filmless” camera! For almost a century, photography enthusiasts sagely discussed such topics as 35mm film, light meters and F-stops; today, digital cameras have made such topics all but obsolete.
Howstuffworks.com contains an article by Gurevich, Karim, and Wilson that greatly simplifies an explanation of how digital cameras work. Very simply, they explain that CDs, mp3’s, and DVDs all share the same technology: they convert traditional analog “wave” data into digital data based upon “bits.” In so doing, this radical shift in technology has changed greatly – and forever – how we do things and what has become possible including digital “filmless” cameras. While film cameras depend upon chemical and mechanical processes, Canon EOS 40D 10.1 camera digital cameras contain a computer that records images electronically.
In 1994, Kodak and Apple developed and sold the first digital cameras. Today there are hundreds of models to choose from, depending upon the type of pictures you need, the complexity with which you’re comfortable, and what digital camera you can afford. For everyday use, most people prefer a “point and shoot” camera that isn’t complex, takes good quality pictures that can be loaded onto computers or printed for personal use and to send to friends, and is affordable. According to a number of consumer guides and customer reviews, the top ten digital cameras in the low, mid, and high price ranges are:
1. Nikon D300 (high)
2. Canon EOS 5D (high)
3. Canon EOS 40D (high)
4. HP Photosmart M547 (low, great value)
5. FujiFilm Finepix S700 (mid)
6. GE A730 (mid)
7. Nikon D200 (high)
8. Canon EOS Digital Rebel Xsi (high)
9. Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ18 (mid)
10. Canon EOS 30D (high)
The point should be made that what constitutes a “great” digital camera is usually in the eye of the beholder. One person’s “top ten” list is almost certain to differ from another person’s. For example, a digital camera that is making devoted converts is the Casio Exilim series that sells in the mid-level price range, depending upon your digital camera photography needs. On the other end, Digital Camera.com rates the Pentax Optio E-10 as “the worst digital camera ever.”
With all these differing opinions, what’s the best way to buy the digital camera that’s right for you? If you simply want to take personal pictures, choose a digital camera that has at least three megapixels. This will give you good quality pictures at a very affordable price. Remember that the higher the number of megapixels, the better quality your pictures will be, but the digital camera you choose will be more complex and more expensive. Also consider the size and shape of the camera; is it easy for you to carry in your purse or pocket? Finally, be sure your digital camera has at least 256-512 megabites of space on its memory card so you won’t have to buy additional memory cards. Taking all these factors into consideration will help you enjoy capturing treasured memories for years to come.

I used it for lot of night photography with my 40D and really liked it . The cable is lengthy so very handy.
I bought this item in January of 2009. It looked exactly like the photo at the top of the page. It worked fine for several months. But eventually it started performing erratically. Some times I could get the focus lock, but I couldn’t fire the shutter. Other times it wouldn’t work at all. At first I thought there was a short in the cord near the plug, because moving the cord would occasionally restore proper function.
However, I discovered that the real problem was that the plug was coming apart. I removed it from my camera and part of it stayed in the socket exposing three metal contacts. I was able to put it back together and restore intermittent function. When it stopped working, I would wiggle the plug or push it securely into the socket and eventually it would start working again.
I decided that I needed a reliable replacement, so I considered the Canon brand. But I read reviews complaining about the quality of its construction as well. I concluded that I could afford to buy this cheaper release and treat it more delicately until it started cutting out again.
When the product arrived, I was in for a surprise. It had been completely redesigned. The cord was considerably thicker. And the plug now has a silver-colored hard-plastic component that snaps into the outer rim of the camera socket, holding the plug securely in place. (It looks just like the plug on the Canon brandCanon RS-80N3 Remote Switch for EOS-1V/1VHS, EOS-3, EOS-D2000, D30, D60, 1D, 1Ds, EOS-1D Mark II,III, EOS-1Ds Mark II,III, EOS-10D, 20D, 30D,40D, 50D, 5D.)
This is a vastly superior product than the one pictured. Opteka needs to update its photo.
If you are looking for a simple shutter release, you want to buy this one. I anticipate that it will outlast my camera body.
Bravo, Opteka, for improving the quality of your product.
I would buy a shorter cord because if you try to tied it shorter the remote release don’t work and sometimes even after I let it stretch it still don’t work properly or not at all.
I use this all the time! I use it for my macro photography, but where it really shines is in Children and Baby portrait Photography!! It allow you to get out from behind your camera and get those smiles and laughs that can be so hard to get!!
I was on the fence about ordering this or the Canon equivelent for my 20D. After reading the reviews I was skeptical but one of the more recent ones referenced a change in the design that enhanced the durability. So far I’ve found it to be a fantastic release cord that works as promised. The 10′ length is a huge plus for taking family photographs and portraits of my one year old son. I highly recommend this product for the price.
I bought this 1+ year back . first one I bought had a image split issue . the photo is taken is broken into 2 images . so I returned to Amazon and they send me a new one . great Amazon customer service , but 2 nd one I have now is giving Error 99 ( this seems to be a common issue for Cannon , please search error 99 in the google for cannon). once you get this error it seems you cannot do anything . it seems camera is dead . so I just passed 1 year and camera is dead . I am really disappointed with Cannon.
it seems that Error 99 is common to all cannon EOS Camera’s . not just for 40 D . it is for 10 , 20 , 30 and 50 D as well .
read following article . they all have this Error 99 . by reading web it seems cannon customer service also horrible . beware if you are going to buy cannon . my 1000’s of hard earned money was wasted . stay away from cannon

The 40D is a great camera! Just don’t expect it to blow you a way in low light.
My son has the same camera so I knew what to expect. I’m just learning but so far it is much easier to handle than I thought! In short, I love it so far!!
This camera was given to me as a gift nearly two years ago and I am still thrilled with it. It replaced a 350D and I have never looked back – the larger body size, picture quality, much improved controls and all around utility make this camera a winner. A friend of mine recently picked up a 50D and I don’t have the heart to tell him that I think the 40D is a better deal.
This camera was a steal when it was selling at $1300 and the lower prices make this a no brainer. If you want a C sized format, do yourself a favor and get it.
There are a significant number of technical reviews on this camera so I’ll be brief. This is an excellent camera. Only upgrade that it lacks & I wish it had is in camera lens correction. The camera is very fast. It easily takes 6+ frames a second. Auto focus is very fast also, even in less than perfect light. You’ll be able to use for virtually all sporting events. But it also has good depth & coloration for landscapes, portraits, etc. It does only have a 12 bit color processing system but color is very good. AND don’t let the ONLY 10 megapixel issue throw you. Although 10mp may seem light compared to the newer models, I believe that is one of the reasons the camera is so good at processing light. The pixels are less compressed on the sensor and really seem to pick up light much better than some of the newer camera’s. And you will find that the 10mp is more than you’ll need even if you like to crop your photo’s several times or blow them up large enough to frame & hang on the wall.
AND the biggest plus? This camera is a bargain right now. With the new 7D & 50D out, people are unloading this model very quickly. If you want a camera to use for several years, try this one & take the money you’ll save and buy a couple of very good PRIME lens. You’ll get amazing results out of even marginal camera’s if you use good lens. And if you match up a couple of good lens (TRY USING PRIMES, not telephoto’s! Save the telephoto’s for sporting events, etc!) to this camera you’ll be very, very happy with the results. Fyi, I would give this camera 4.5-4.75 stars if I could. I would give it 5 if it had in camera correction (for some lens aberrations) & a 14 bit color processor. Good shooting!
This works just as it is supposed to. I have a Canon Xsi DSLR and a handful of lenses from my mother’s 40 year old pentax. All work great!
I use this with a super takumar 50mm f1.8. Maybe you’ll like better the af confirm version selling in ebay. Excelent adapter. Fast shipping.
I felt the original battery was pretty good in my 40D. I could take about 900 pictures with it. This replacement battery goes forever. Since I am still in learn mode, I tend to take multiple shots at various settings. The battery lasted a week, with 10% flash, constant picture review, constantly being left on….
Just get one. Besides, you should have a spare on hand anyways.
The KINAMAX battery uses a Japanese Cell so the life of the battery is longer and you get the full advertised power instead of the fake batteries that advertise one amount but do not come close to it.
Great price great battery, what else can you say?
I purchased this battery for my Canon 40D, and I have to tell you, this is the best battery deal out there. The factory battery is a respectable 1390mAh, but this battery is 2000mAh. I took almost a thousand pictures with it last weekend at a car show and still had battery left. That’s impressive. Two of these are all you could ever need. My only gripe is that it’s a little loose in my charger, it still works though. Go get a couple of these things.
The battery holds a charge well but the physical size of this battery is just slightly smaller, (In Width) than the original and as such makes for a sloppy fit. I’m using this on a Canon ZR50. It hasn’t fallen off, just isn’t snug. I don’t regret buying it.
Seriously, who writes a review of a battery? After all, it’s just a battery. Not necessarily so. The Canon battery costs more and has less storage capacity. When purchasing batteries, be sure to look at the storage capacity of the batteries in question. The storage capacity of batteries this size is expressed in mAh (milli ampere hours). The higher the mAh number, the more energy the battery stores. This battery has almost 44% more storage capacity than the Canon battery. Want to compare more batteries? Try this – divide the cost of the battery by the number of mAh. For this battery, $24.67 divided by 2000 (mAh) equals $.0123 per mAh. For the Canon battery, $37.59 divided by 1390 (mAh) equals $.027 per mAh. By the way, I use this battery in my Canon EOS-40D.
Not really designed well and uncomfortable – just like so many reviewers said. Guess I had to see for myself. If you have large hands I wouldn’t recommend this strap. Would probably be a better fit for a woman’s hand.
This is by far my most favorite accessory for my camera. I hate having the neck strap dangling all over. This is very comfortable. A couple of things could be improved. The actual strap needs a little more reinforcement. I think the metal piece on the camera will eventually cut through the nylon before the rest of the strap will wear out. The strap could be a little wider. When it passes through the padded section, that tends to bend over on itself because the strap is very narrow. I love having the camera attached to my hand. I took the camera out in New Orleans on Bourbon Street and felt completely safe like no one would try and rip it out of my hands or cut the strap and run. Overall, I would not hesitate to buy another one when this one wears out, even without the needed changes.
I bought this for use with my 40D. I was doing a lot of shooting with the camera held in one hand and a flash held in the other. The trouble was, I couldn’t really operate the camera with one hand. For example, after shooting a couple of frames, I would want to switch to playback mode and review the images. I found I couldn’t press the “play” button with the hand holding the camera. So I was left juggling the camera and the flash.
I thought that with this strap, I would be able to completely hold and operate the camera with one hand. Unfortunately when you have your hand in the strap and the camera is completely hanging off one hand, you CANNOT reach any of the buttons. The shutter release is the only thing that you can reach, and that’s awkward. The problem is the camera hangs down, leaving your thumb way above any of the buttons. If you want to press any of the buttons on the camera, you need to hold it with your other hand.
