I’ve owned this camera for about two years, and I’m generally pretty unhappy with it.

My biggest complaint is the incredible delay between the time you hit the shutter button and the time this thing actually snaps off a picture … it varies depending on conditions, but usually is a full 2-3 seconds. That doesn’t sound like much, but try counting it to yourself … one Mississippi, two Mississippi, three Mississippi … and imagine trying to take any kind of action shot with that sort of delay. Forget about kid pictures, they don’t sit still long enough for this thing! I’ve gotten more pictures of the backs of my kids’ heads than I can count.

The digital zoom is hokey and clumsy to use. The optical zoom works well, but is underwhelming at 2x power.

The detail in the full 3 megapixel shots is very nice, but the color balance and exposure are often too dark, too orange, whatever. Outdoor shots in full light usually look good with nice contrast and detail. The flash is weak, as noted by other reviewers.

Nearly all of this camera’s functions are dependent on a fragile four-way “joypad” control. Mine broke after a few months, and was replaced free (after another 2 months of delay) by Canon. The knob on the top that selects operating modes feels very flimsy, and sticks out such that it is easily jarred into an “on” setting when the camera is slipped into or out of a pocket or bag.

Canon’s lack of inclusion of a rechargeable battery and recharger are inexcusable for a camera that burns through $15 disposable batteries in a few days.

One last complaint — this camera is heavy for its size! The metal body (aside from the flimsy controls) has a rugged feel, but you will definitely feel the weight of this unit if you lug it around in a pocket.

This camera works well. The image quality is good. It does not break or malfunction. The CompactFlash card is popular and nearly standard. On the downside, the battery life is quite short, there is no included USB-computer support, and pictures seem to come out somewhat overexposed so an image editing program is a must. Overall I wouldn’t hesitate to get this camera again because the good points really outweigh the bad.

Bought it 2 years ago for $$$ and $$$$ for battery pack.
POSITIVE:
NONE!

NEGATIVE:
1. OVER PRICE.
2. TERRIBLE PICTURES.
3. BATTERY ONLY LAST 20 TO 30 MINUTES (40 PICTURES).
4. 2X ZOOM ?? CAN’T DO A THING!!
5. NO UNDERWATER CASE

MUST BE BLIND TO SAY IT IS A GOOD CAMERA!
SKIP IT! NOT WORTH A DIME!!!

If possible, I would have given the camara some negative stars.

I was glad when I first got the camera. But it did not function at all after I used the camera for less than 10 times within a year. I called customer service and was told to send it back to factory. I was told I would be charged about $160 to fix the camera. I asked what the problem was and was told they did not know what the exact problem was until they took the camera apart and gave a close check!

If you want to find a reliable digital camera, try some other brand but not canon.

Item came earlier than promised from shipper. excellent shape and brand new as promised. Took with me this past weekend to D.C. for a photo shoot. Worked really great. Clear lens and solid construction. Only problem, when shooting in low light hard to get good white balance.

Overall well satisfied with product.

I was very nervous about ordering this. I have a Canon Rebel XTi with two zoom lenses: a wide angle zoom and a tele zoom. Both are auto-focus and image stabelized (IS) lenses that I am most happy with.

However, the really expensive ones that have the matched tele converters are way out of my price range; so both of these are the less expensive (about 1/3 the cost of Canon’s best lenses). So I knew I couldn’t get any sort of teleconverter that would allow me to have the auto-focus and the IS capabilities; but I really wanted to be able to double my tele zoom for selected shots on our upcoming Kenya safari.

I stewed for a couple of months over this. I didn’t (and don’t) mind not being able to use the auto-focus or IS (though I sort of hoped I could find something that might let use the auto-focus capability).

I came upon this teleconverter browsing throught Amazon.com and read the specs. I reserched it a bit and was encouraged by the ability to use the auto-focus for at least some of the zoom levels. I also loved the price (though in the back of my head I was reminding myself of the old addage “if it seems to be too good to be true; then it probably is”).

Given the excellent price, I took a chance and went ahead and ordered it. It arrived promptly and I “took it out for a spin” the last couple of weekends at our local zoo. And I am most impressed with it. It does, indeed, allow me to use the auto-focus for all but the highest zoom levels and the pictures, as far as I can tell, are terrific. I would caveat that assessment, however, by saying that I am definitely just an amature that those with more discriminating eyes may beg to differ. I would promptly yield to their assessment; but for my purposes, this has turned out to be just what I needed and I am most satisfied with it.

Galicia December 28, 2009 at 12:36 am

After several days of research as to whether I would go with a more expensive tele photo lens or the Teleconverter, I decided I would try the latter. I tried using the 2x freehand and was sadly disappointed. I do not have the steadiest hands and when reviewing pictures I had taken of my sons football game I noticed all but a few were blurry and out of focus. I tried it on AF and MF and still the same outcome. However, when I put my Canon on a tripod and took pictures on MF I had better luck. I love the advantage the 2x gives in getting closer to the action I just wish it were easier to use without the tripod. The company I dealt with was excellent and gave great and prompt service.

Just got this in the mail today and tried to put it on my Rebel XSI. Fits the camera but not my EF-S lens. After reading the instructions found out I can not use it. It does not work with Canon EF-S lenses. No where in the description does it say you cannot use the EF-S lenses or EOS lenses. It does say it on the box when you get it but it is too late. I will be sending it back.
