I searched many months for a camera. Read review after review and test drove a few. Purchased the SD870 IS and was a bit dissapointed by the picture quality (lots of red eye indoors no matter what mode) and the durability of the thing. My husband had it in his pocket and cracked the LCD during a fishing trip. It was not covered so I paid for the repair. Then just the other day I dropped it not 3 feet from the ground while playing back the Halloween photos I took of my kids and poof the lens was dead. The pieces just crumbled and this was on carpet and we do not have cement floors. I am very unhappy with the quality and just wanted to let others know that if you have butter fingers (typically I do not have) then this camera is not for you. One bounce and it is burnt TOAST. I am back on the prowl for a “tough/waterproof” camera in hopes to avoid such problems in the future.

The SD850 IS was first announced in May 2007 as a replacement for the Powershot SD700 IS. It constitutes only a relatively subtle upgrade.

Visually the SD850 is virtually indistinguishable from the older model, and there are only a handful of modifications to the specification of the camera. Most notably the sensor now records 8MP images instead of 6 and the resolution of the 2.5" screen has been increased to 230,000 pixels. The 'digital heart' beating in the SD850 is now the latest generation of Canon's imaging processor, the DIGIC III. With the new processor there come a couple of new features too: Face Detection and the useful Auto ISO shift option.

Features:-

* 8.0 million Effective pixels
* Widescreen (16:9) stills recording
* Canon's DIGIC III image processor, iSAPS, 9-point AiAF and Face Detection
* ISO 1600 and optical IS for flash-free indoor shooting
* 16 shooting modes
* Wide viewing angle 2.5" LCD screen (230,000 pixels)
* My Colors photo effects
* 4x (35-140mm equiv.) zoom
* 30fps VGA movies with time lapse mode

Design:-

# Front: - The front of the Canon PowerShot SD850 IS is branded on the left side with a textured metal Canon logo and a printed model name. The right side of the camera’s front is a little busier. The optical zoom lens takes up most of this side. The lens sits flat with the rest of the camera body until it is turned on: it then extends in three segments. Each segment has a shiny chrome ring around its edge.

# Left side:-The left side of the SD850 doesn’t Canon PowerShot SD870IS Digital 8MP Camera have any features. There are dark, medium, and light silver panels and two tiny screws.

# Back: - The left side of the back features a 2.5-inch LCD screen surrounded by a darker silver-colored panel. The panel unifies the LCD screen with another viewing tool, the optical viewfinder, directly above it. To the right of the optical viewfinder are two small LED indicator lamps. Just right of these is a small power button with its own LED.

# Top: - The shutter button is on the top of the Canon PowerShot SD850 IS. It is mildly domed, outfitted in chrome, and surrounded by a zoom ring that hardly moves at all. On the left side of the top is an "Image Stabilizer" label. Beneath the label are five holes that make up the speaker grill.

# Right side:-The right side has a chrome wrist strap eyelet in the center that curves up ever so slightly. A niche beneath it makes stringing the strap a little less of a chore. Near the top is a plastic door held on by a thin rubber strip. It covers the A/V out port on top and the USB port on bottom. Behind it is a tiny space big enough for the tip of a fingernail to pry the door open.

# Bottom: - From the bottom, users can see the slight wedge shape of the SD850. The wedge is interrupted by the fat panel for the LCD screen. Near the right side is a quarter-inch metal tripod socket surrounded by little bumps to keep the camera from scratching on a tripod mounting plate.

Photo quality: - Photo quality was very good on the SD850 IS. The camera took well-exposed photos, with pleasing, accurate colors. Sharpness is right in the middle: not too sharp, not too soft (and this can be adjusted if you desire). Noise is minimal until you hit ISO 400, with the ISO 800 setting being usable for small prints (ISO 1600 on the other hand, is not). Purple fringing was not a problem. The negatives in the image quality department include noticeable corner blurriness and severe redeye, both of which are common in the ultra-compact class. While there's not much you can do about the blurriness (you won't see it in all but the largest prints, though), you can use the tool in playback mode to get rid of the redeye.

Performance: - Camera performance is excellent. The SD850 is ready to shoot in about a second, which is above average. Focusing times were very good, even in low light situations. Shutter lag wasn't an issue, and shot-to-shot delays were minimal. While the burst rate isn't terribly high, the SD850 can keep shooting at 1.3 frames/second until your high speed memory card fills up. Battery life was average in the ultra-compact group and, like all Canon cameras; the SD850 supports the USB 2.0 High Speed standard.

This camera is a great little convenient camera, which is able to be concealed easily, and taken about anywhere because it easily slips into a purse or pocket. It's a great camera for taking indoor portraits with flash, as well as outdoor photos. It is not good at stopping action.

Pictures of kids and pets running around will often be blurry because of the 1/60 sec. shutter speed. If you need to take low-light or action/sports photos, you would be better off purchasing a cheap DSLR. The only reason I don't give this camera 5 stars is because of the noise at higher ISO's.

I liked this camera until the display stopped working. And, of course it stopped working within days of when the warranty expired. Canon’s response was for me to purchase a refurbished camera from them at a reduced price or to send it in for repairs. If the camera only lasted a year, why would I want to buy another Canon? And, for the price of what I’m sure it would cost to repair (and I will be without a camera for an unknown period of time) it’s hardly worth repairing. I will definitely look at another brand to replace this. I just hate that electronics are so disposable these days–what a waste.

I say “loved it” because my friend dropped it on Halloween. I took great pics on land and underwater (in the Canon housing), and did excellent macro. My only complaint is that after a couple years some pixels started dying in the LCD screen. Could have replaced the screen if my friend didn’t total it- oh well.

Good all-around camera, though obsolete. Re-purchased due to theft and to fit in an existing underwater housing.

Just got this in the mail today and tried to put it on my Rebel XSI. Fits the camera but not my EF-S lens. After reading the instructions found out I can not use it. It does not work with Canon EF-S lenses. No where in the description does it say you cannot use the EF-S lenses or EOS lenses. It does say it on the box when you get it but it is too late. I will be sending it back.

Jamieson December 26, 2009 at 4:09 pm

I was very nervous about ordering this. I have a Canon Rebel XTi with two zoom lenses: a wide angle zoom and a tele zoom. Both are auto-focus and image stabelized (IS) lenses that I am most happy with.

However, the really expensive ones that have the matched tele converters are way out of my price range; so both of these are the less expensive (about 1/3 the cost of Canon’s best lenses). So I knew I couldn’t get any sort of teleconverter that would allow me to have the auto-focus and the IS capabilities; but I really wanted to be able to double my tele zoom for selected shots on our upcoming Kenya safari.

I stewed for a couple of months over this. I didn’t (and don’t) mind not being able to use the auto-focus or IS (though I sort of hoped I could find something that might let use the auto-focus capability).

I came upon this teleconverter browsing throught Amazon.com and read the specs. I reserched it a bit and was encouraged by the ability to use the auto-focus for at least some of the zoom levels. I also loved the price (though in the back of my head I was reminding myself of the old addage “if it seems to be too good to be true; then it probably is”).

Given the excellent price, I took a chance and went ahead and ordered it. It arrived promptly and I “took it out for a spin” the last couple of weekends at our local zoo. And I am most impressed with it. It does, indeed, allow me to use the auto-focus for all but the highest zoom levels and the pictures, as far as I can tell, are terrific. I would caveat that assessment, however, by saying that I am definitely just an amature that those with more discriminating eyes may beg to differ. I would promptly yield to their assessment; but for my purposes, this has turned out to be just what I needed and I am most satisfied with it.

Holden December 26, 2009 at 5:28 pm

After several days of research as to whether I would go with a more expensive tele photo lens or the Teleconverter, I decided I would try the latter. I tried using the 2x freehand and was sadly disappointed. I do not have the steadiest hands and when reviewing pictures I had taken of my sons football game I noticed all but a few were blurry and out of focus. I tried it on AF and MF and still the same outcome. However, when I put my Canon on a tripod and took pictures on MF I had better luck. I love the advantage the 2x gives in getting closer to the action I just wish it were easier to use without the tripod. The company I dealt with was excellent and gave great and prompt service.

Item came earlier than promised from shipper. excellent shape and brand new as promised. Took with me this past weekend to D.C. for a photo shoot. Worked really great. Clear lens and solid construction. Only problem, when shooting in low light hard to get good white balance.

Overall well satisfied with product.
