The reviews for this are good, but I am not to happy with my camera. I did have a Fugi finepix camera before the Olympus and the pics were great! The camera broke so I decided to try this one. The pics aren’t as good as my other one so I would only give this one a 3 star.
I am picky about my pictures. I like the objects to be centered and showing detail. A lot of times when I take a picture with this camera it turns out blurry. You are supppsed to focus on the image you want take and push the button down halfway so the camera will focus then take the pic. A lot of times I just want the pic so I just point and shoot, so it turns out blury. A lot people probably would not notice this. If you try and blow the picture up and print it out, that’s when you can tell.
This also doesn’t have the little eye piece you can look into. Just a big screen on the back. That doesn’t bother me unless I am trying to take a picture outdoors on a really bright sunny day. It’s hard to see the screen if it’s to bright outside.
The video quality is horrible too. Very grainy and hard to see.

This camera has met my expectations in so many ways. I should note I never really wanted to start looking for a new camera when I started looking for this one, but a camping trip (where I actually stored my camera in the tent!) sent my Canon to its grave. This was the second digital camera I’d lost to outdoor exposure. No more. I’m now a loyal Olympus fan.
Thus far, my Olympus has been through the rain and cloud forests of Costa Rica, through several feet of freshly falling snow in Romania, and on many a camping trip and trail. And I’m just as happy with it as day one.
The images are crip and clear, it fits perfectly in my jean pockets, and I like the fact that the lens withdraws within the camera to avoid scratches. Battery life has been outstanding. It seems to be such an issue with so many electronic devices, but I’ve found that I can take hundreds of pictures with my 810 without a hitch. Now that I think about it, on my recent trip to Romania, I was snapping away with the camera without an electric converter or spare battery and never ran out of batteries over my 11 days.
At first I was a little disappointed that I couldn’t find a weatherproof camera with a viewfinder, but I’ve become very used to the LCD digital display as of late, and it hasn’t proven a problem.
If there is one thing that I would like to change about this camera, it’s the curved edges. Sure, they look good. But say you want to take vertically-oriented image in the middle of the night? You can’t set the camera on a level surface with the curves edges on the sides (and you can’t hold it in your hands, or the image will blur due to the long exposure), though you can shoot horizontally. I guess I could get a tripod, but this is a point-and-shoot camera…
And if the worst I can do is to complain about a camera’s ability to shoot a particular orientation in the middle of the night…not bad, right?
I like the size of this camera — perfect for dropping in a pocket on a trip. It takes pretty good, even some great pictures. Functionally, my only complaint is that the zoom isn’t quite as good as I would like, but then again, I knew the specs coming in. I don’t use the software so I can’t comment on that. I’m a Mac user and iPhoto does what I need it to do, so if you have PhotoShop or iPhoto you probably won’t use the software that is bundled with it either.
Bought this camera last year. Okay for day light photos and worst for night mode. I tried different settings but still could not use this camera to take pictures during the night time.

This camera got great reviews in Consumer Reports, and I’m sure it’s perfect for some, but it’s far too slow to get good pictures of active kids. The “weatherproof” feature would’ve been nice, but I exchanged it for something faster.
I cannot add much to what has already been said by happy buyers. I have used this camera for the better part of a year. The Power Shot A580 is a really good little camera. I did notice something that I do not think anyone mentioned. That is, when one looks at the screen while taking a picture, a rectangle appears and quickly shrinks down to reveal the exact spot that the automatic focus is zeroing in. For example, when a face is on the far right of the picture you will see the camera focus on that face by means of the rectangle zeroing in on it. Wow!
My opinion of the less than 4 Star critiques is that they had simply lost perspectives on what to hope for in a really small digital camera. Their criticisms were sort of like those people who criticized the little bitty spy cameras of yesteryear because they did a poor job of portraiture and scenic photography.
Yes, the A580 does not accept interchangeable lenses or accessories like polarizing filters, add on close up lenses, or add on telephoto lenses. The A580 is just a very good all around camera that takes really good pictures very easily. And it beats the daylight out of most other small sized cameras.
Of course, even better pocket sized cameras are already starting to appear in the market place. And in 2011 even better cameras will appear. And on and on. I have placed an order for one of these…another Canon that I will not identify here. I will say that it has 12.1 mega pixels, HD movies at 30fps, optical anti-shake, and a lower price. I cannot recommend this camera, at least not until I have used it for a few months. It could be a dud.
By the way, I purchased my A580 at a BiMart store in Oregon – on sale at a much lower price than is advertised by Amazon. If I were shopping for the A580 today, I think I might purchase the “Used, as New Condition” for one advertised on Amazon for only $110.00. However, I did order my next Canon from Amazon.com. I shop around. ‘caviet emptor.’
Nice point and shoot camera to carry around. Takes excellent pictures in daylight, but you do not have control of camera speed or aperature settings. When indoors the flash is very slow to recycle.
I bought this camera a few years ago, when I started to get into photography. it’s perfect for a beginner; it captures amazing detail in outdoor photography and I was quite happy with it.
Pros:
-beautiful, crisp outdoor pictures
-hardly any shutter lag
-easy to use for the technologically impaired
-takes OK videos (for a camera)
-doesn’t eat batteries like Kodak
-has lots of settings if you want to do it manually
-takes great action shots; hardly any blur
-big enough to feel solid and indestructible, but small enough to be compact
-pretty good zoom
Cons:
-indoor pictures aren’t too great; they either come out blurry or dark w/out flash or way too unnaturally bright w/flash
-same with nighttime pictures
-when using flash, shutter lag is much longer and is often inconvenient
-not as stylish as other cameras
Overall, for the money, this camera is awesome. It’s nearly indestructible (I’ve dropped it about a million times, taking it horseback riding, shoved it into a gym bag that was thrown all over a bus, and carried it with me on numerous adventures while traveling in Spain). I’m sixteen, and a few friends have teased me about my ‘old lady camera’, but you know what? It takes better pictures than their slim, colorful ones ANY day. I highly recommend this camera. The Cons list didn’t affect me at all because I don’t take indoor pictures or night pictures, and I never use the flash because I’m always outside.
I plan on maybe upgrading to an SLR, but I’ve taken some beautiful pictures with this camera, and I definitely recommend it, it’s a good camera for anyone.
This camera is a techie’s little dream. I have a large Sony SLR that does whatever I want it to except travel lightly. The PowerShot A580 does that for me. It’s light and has all of the bells and whistles I need for getting that little extra push to make a picture even better. At the same time, my Muggle wife can put it in Auto and just point and shoot. One underated feature I really appreciate is the optical viewfinder. On bright days when the display washes out, I can still shoot with confidence. Most of the other popular brands don’t have this feature so I didn’t even consider their offerings.

BUYER BEWARE: The A580 camera has a basic design flaw. The motorized lens is given to jamming and displaying “Lens error, restart camera” error message. Do not buy this camera, or any similar A Series Canon digital camera, as they all have the potential for this problem.
Canon is currently stonewalling the public that no such problem exists. Use Google and do a quick search for the error message above if you have any doubts that this isn’t a widespread problem.
I just bought a A580 through a factory upgrade of my defective A530. Within 15 minutes of the first power up, I started getting the Lens error message. The camera is a factory refurbished unit, so no way Canon should not know this camera has a problem.
Maybe the best way to get Canon to deal with the problem honestly is to start listing serial numbers of Canon digital cameras and their problems, so that if Canon rotates the serial number back into stock, the next poor sucker will find out the serial number history and know that it is already bad. Please post your serial number and the problems with it so Canan can’t get away with recycling known defective cameras.
