Works perfectly with my Olympus SP-560 UZ. The PL filter is mounted on a bearing with allows free 360-degree rotation in order to get maximum effect, which is a nice addition.
Things to keep in mind when using this product: If you don’t have the telephoto tube attached and you have a filter in place on the base tube, be careful not to use the zoom because the barrel will extend and come into contact with the filter glass and it will throw off the camera’s ability to focus (which can be fixed simply by restarting the camera). I’m not sure if this has the potential to damage the camera, so use caution. Also, with the telephoto tube attached, you can only get a full frame photo with the camera zoomed in past halfway to full (which should be common sense to most).
Overall, very satisfied with this product.
The Olympus SP-570 is a 10 megapixel digital camera with a 20x optical zoom lens. This is the longest lens currently available on a consumer digital camera.
Why Buy the Olympus SP-570?
I guess I’m stating the obvious when I say the main attraction of the SP-570 is the long zoom lens. This length of zoom usually comes in handy for wildlife and sporting subjects. In addition to the length of the lens, the camera also has manual exposure controls. For anyone who is use to handing an SLR camera you may be interested to hear that the lens is zoomed in and out by twisting the lens barrel rather than the more typical method of pushing buttons on the back of the camera.
As you would expect with a lens this size, the SP-570 offers image stabilisation. The lens has a focal length equivalent to 26 - 520mm in 35mm format. This makes the lens wide angle and makes it ideal for shooting wide scenes, such as landscapes. The camera also comes with a set of manual exposure controls. Therefore this camera is a good choice for someone who sees photography as a hobby.
Image Quality Olympus SP-570 test shots
Outdoor 1 (Medium Zoom)
The SP-570 certainly handles the lighter colours well in this shot with plenty of detail showing in the boats and also in the white wooden slats under the roof of the building.
There is also impressive levels of detail showing in the in some of the more lightly shaded areas. Focusing is sharp with the brickwork of the building standing out well.
Colours have a gentler feel to them than many of the digital cameras I have tested recently.
Outdoor 2 (No Zoom)
This is another fair effort. Sharpness stands up well considering the distance between the camera and the scene. You can also see the benefit of the wide angle lens with plenty of the scene showing in the shot.
Outdoor 3 (Maximum Zoom)
With the lens zoomed into to its maximum capacity purple fringing becomes quite evident. This will be more of a problem when taking photos with light coloured objects in the scene, such as the boats in the test shot. As with many cameras, offering extreme length of lens focusing loses some of its sharpness when the lens is fully extended.
Outdoor 4 (Building)
In this test shot the SP-570 copes well with the scene. Olympus SP-560UZ Camera As I would expect the picture is sharper and the camera has no problem focusing on the brickwork of the building.
Outdoor Portrait
There are no problems with sharpness or colour in this shot. If you find the result is darker in the shadows than you would like then you can try using flash to lighten these areas.
Indoor Portrait with Flash
This is another sharply focused effort. The flash is quite powerful and shows quite clearly on areas of the face.
Indoor Portrait without Flash
For me this is the most impressive photo out of all my test shots. The SP-570 is able to use the available light to produce a natural looking shot. Brightness and definition are better than the vast majority of cameras are able to manage. This is one of the benefits of working with a camera that has a large sized lens.
Colours
In most cases, the colours produced by this Olympus digital camera are calmer and less vivid than most other brands produce. There are instances where I would like to have seen more punch to the colours, but this is a matter of personal taste.
Macro
This is another shot where I am impressed by the amount of brightness the camera is able to show in the photo. Levels of detail are good without quite being top drawer. A touch of purple fringing also shows where the light catches the edge of the watch.
ISO 400 and ISO 1600
My test shots at both ISO 400 and ISO 1600 show fairly typical levels of noise. If you push ISO above these levels, it really becomes a serious problem.
Overall
Overall I’m pretty happy. Picture quality impressed me in most situations.
Shutter Lag
A single photo took 0.52 seconds with five taking 12.23 seconds. Turning the flash on increased the times to 1.35 seconds for a single photo and 14.59 seconds for five. I would like to have seen faster times for all of the tests.
It took the camera 3.05 seconds to turn on and capture the first photo.
You can compare this camera to other models by taking a look at the Shutter Lag Comparison Table.
Style: The SP-570 has as much of an SLR like feel than any other compact digital camera I can remember testing. It has a very solid feel in the hand and looks like a compact SLR. It is available in black.
Dimensions: 118.5 x 84 x 87.5 mm
Weight: 445g
Batteries: Four AA batteries are required to power the camera.
Memory cards: The camera is compatible with xD cards. Olympus has built enough memory into the SP-570 to store around 21 photos.
Ease of use rating: Good. To get the most out of thisOlympus digital camera you will need to spend plenty of time working with the camera and getting used to all the controls the camera offers. Olympus has done a good job in placing various controls at your fingertips. There is a control dial on top of the camera and dedicated buttons for focus and exposure lock, continuous shooting and a switch to select manual or automatic focusing.
Points I like:
Looks good – build quality – handling – picture quality
Where it could improve:
Shutter delay could be faster
Alternatives
Although there are an increasing number of longer and longer lenses on the market, the longest lenses I have tested before the SP-570 have 18x zoom lenses. One camera I would suggest checking out is the Nikon Coolpix P80.
Verdict:
The Olympus SP-570 handles more like a Digital SLR than any other camera I have tested. I like the barrel twisting method of zoom. Add in a hot shoe, RAW mode and various manual controls and you have a very good camera for a photography enthusiast.

CONS
Had to buy funky XD memory card instead of standard SD I already had a few of
Lens cap comes off too easily, subjecting lens to ruinous scratching risk–reflects badly on all OLYMPUS products
They say video is subpar, but I rarely use it for that
PROS
Awesome 20x zoom
Wonderful dual stabilization of image (does not seem to work on super macro, don’t know about macro)
Very good feel in hands
LOVE the trade off of manual zoom only in order to substantially extend battery life
Love the quick button that changes or temporarily eliminates picture data, allowing you to see the whole image
Pre-set options for various types of point and shoot images overly abundant for most users–fabulous
Also love the trade off of learning to remember to pop up the flash manually only, in order to extend battery life (some
pic modes will remind you on screen to press the button to pop up the flash)
Make sure you immediately get and carry photo lens tissues in your camera bag; don’t want to scratch that lens. And get a bag big enough to carry fresh batts too.
I have quite a bit of money invested in the Olympus system. My first foray into serious digital photography began when I bought the Olympus C-700 UZ super zoom camera. Soon after I started taking indoor photos, I realized the built in flash was not enough. I bought separate flash units made by Olympus and I migrated right on up to the most powerful unit they make which was the FL-50 Flash with a hot shoe connection to the camera body. To use the flash with the C-700 I had to buy a synch cable and flash bracket with a hot shoe to connect it to the flash. The TTL flash metering system makes sure the exposure is right every time because the feedback to the flash unit comes right through the lens used to take the photo. The flash has become the most important piece of equipment I use in my photography because without good lighting you cannot get good photos. So my first consideration each time I buy an Olympus camera is does it have a hot shoe for the flash? I sold the C-700 and bought a C-750. I sold that after a while and migrated to the C-770. I kept the C-770 and I also bought an E-Volt 330 which is my main camera now for event photography.
However I still like to have a compact camera to go out with which is why I kept the C-770. This camera was the last of the C series super zooms. Olympus then came out with the SP series of super zooms. Some had a hot shoe some do not. Olympus goes in cycles with their super zooms as to whether or not to include hot shoe, which is what I need to connect to the FL-50 flash. The SP-570-UZ has a hot shoe the SP-565 and SP-560 do not. The new SP-590 has a radio remote flash trigger to work with the new FL-50R flash that can be triggered by radio signals. I think Olympus has moved away from the hot shoe connection for good. So now was the time for me to buy the SP-570-UZ which has a hot shoe. I am of course very pleased with the camera, but I do not think it has an adapter for the Olympus wide angle lens attachment like my C-770. I know it can take the telephoto lens using the CLA-10 adapter tube. I am still happy to have this camera. It is very compact and easy to take along on trips without feeling like I am lugging around a brick.
Love it except it is sometimes slow in taking a photo or slow in the zoom. Not the best for quick photography. Good with close ups. Great for stills and when you have time to set up the shot. I would highly recommend it. Great value for the price. Rarely need to use the flash indoors….
Eventually, digital photography will offer the same quality as film, but until that happens this camera is the perfect compromise for a film guy getting into digital. Nobody needs to explain the concept of “optical stabilization” to a film guy, and this camera has it. Also, this fully automatic camera can go to fully manual with just the touch of a buttom. There’s enough megapixels (10), to statisfy a film guy’s need for “acceptable quality”. But someday, there will be a digital camera with 26 to 28 megapixels . . . .
Please Note: If you buy this Olympus camera buy the Olympus flash (FL-50R). The two were made for each other. And, with a telephoto lens the built-in flash is not sufficient.
I am very happy with the results I’ve received from this camera. The clarity is excellent.
My girlfriend (now wife) gave me this camera before I left on an 8 month trip to SE Asia. I was excited… until I started trying to record my memories with it. The focus feature on this camera is so bad that almost every one of my pictures came out blurry or the focus took so long that the shot was missed. I ended up having her bring my heavy old Canon S30 with her to Thailand so I could have some decent pics. Spent a long time with Olympus who were absolutely no help to me. I still try this camera out now and again and am still disappointed each time. I absolutely hate this camera and am sorry that my wife wasted her money on it!
I ORIGINALLY PURCHASED THIS CAMERA, THEN MY APARTMENT WAS BROKEN INTO AND STOLD IT, AND I LOVED IT SO MUCH, THAT MY SISTER BOUGHT ME THE SAME CAMERA FOR MY BIRTHDAY.
This was a very smart purchase for me. I loved the camera from day one..until…my neice dropped it and it broke…It was very easy to use and very user-friendly..I did however, purchase another camera, but purchased a SLR this time…but nonetheless, for anyone who is not ready to take that leap to the SLR, i would definitely recommend the Olympus, by the way, that was my second Olympus…
It is a wonderful camera.
It does what it says, it really is an ULTRA zoom, and anyone can take great pictures with it.
I recommend it to anyone that wants a quick, easy to operate camera that takes great pictures.
I bought this camera to shoot pictures and videos of my kid during swim meets. I am an amateur. It only took me 15 minutes to figure the camera out using sport mode to film fast pictures and the video mode. Close-up pictures were stable, lighting great even thought the subjects were moving. The zoom is fantastic and I could easy video swimming and zoom in at the same time for an amazing close-up. It automatically adjusted to the various lighting levels of the different swim pools. I could zoom in on the coach who was on the other side of the pool while I was in the bleachers for a candid close up. I could even take close-up still photos of kids racing freestyle.
I’ve had my SP-59UZ four months. I’ve taken several hundred photos during this time. The camera takes excellent photos and is very easy to operate. The optical zoom and image stabilizaition are GREAT! I highly recommend this camera.
I’ve had this camera for about 6 month, and I love it! It’s simple to use and the pictures come out great! I highly recommend it.
Very disappointed with Olympus. I own 2 other Olympus cameras and was very satisfied, bought this camera and after shooting several hundred exposures was not satisfied with results only about 25 % of shots were in focus. Contacted Olympus with my concerns, but they never returned my inquiry. Sent camera back to 17 Th Photo and purchased a Cannon S5 IS. 17 Th St Photo is an excellent retailer and the Cannon S5 IS, in my opinion is a much better camera.
Bought this camera as an upgrade to what I had. Nikon 4 megs. Easy to use and the quality of the pictures are fantastic. For this amount of money, what a bargin. This was my first Olympus and it won’t be my last,
What started out to be another good transaction has gone sour! After receiving the product, I attempted to use it on my camera. It did not work. No problem, I’ll just return it – maybe get something else. Tried to contact the supplier, to get a return authorization and a refund, but they have ignored the issue, and have made no effort to make things right. Isn’t it funny how a few bucks can turn you away from a company forever!
The filters seem fine.
The problem is that I don’t have a use for filters in isolation, I want to use them on my camera. The included adapter is marketed for use with the Olympus SP-570UZ. However, it is clearly marked for the Olympus SP-550UZ, an earlier model that has a shorter zoom range.
The adapter does not move with the lens elements, so at any zoom setting shorter than telephoto, the outer part of the frame is a view of the inside of the adapter tube.
I.e., this kit is useless for anything but telephoto shots.
Part of the fault lies with Olympus, for designing a camera without provision for filters, but Opteka hasn’t solved this problem. Alas, I don’t know any other product that has.
The Olympus SP-565UZ also has a 20x zoom, and would probably have the same problem, but I don’t have one, so I haven’t tried it.
