I had used this for my visits to LA, New york, Niagara. And the I really love this camera

Both Canon and Panasonic has announced their first shock and water-proof compact camera at the beginning of the year. If you are still confused which camera is best for you, here you will find some useful information and comparison between the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS1 and Canon PowerShot D10.

Both the digital cameras are waterproof, but if you wish a camera that can perform around 10 meters underwater, then Canon D10 would be your best shot. The submarine shaped D10 with its porthole-like screws and bulbous shell expresses that this digital camera is purely made for underwater. But on ground, you will notice the bulky size of Canon D10. D10 has easy-to-press buttons and a large LCD screen where icons are big and nice, even with snorkeling mask, you won't have any difficulties in seeing the icons. Additionally, it contains bigger screw-mouths on every corner for mounting the camera in various underwater Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ5A Camera grips.

Now let's take a look at the other waterproof digital camera, Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS1 can only be used up to 3 meters underwater with a completely different approach. The sleek rectangular slab outline has made it hard to distinguish from usual non-tough cams. Compare to Canon D10, the buttons are smaller and shooting modes can be selected by a thumb dial rather than a dedicated button. Yet, you will lose usability underwater with TS1, it will perform better on land and this should be one of your considerations.

Another big difference is that the TS1 shoots in the AVCHD format at 720p, where D10 only does VGA videos of 640×480. But the video recording mode of TS1 is not the most polished one, there is a two to three seconds of delay from hitting the dedicated video button to starting and stopping the video and its quite unclear when exactly everything does start. If you are ok with that delay, you will surely love the excellent HD video mode. Lumix DMC-TS1 is currently experiencing a big bug when importing the taken video into iMovie. The featured AVCHD format of TS1 is quite annoying and you might require installing particular codec to import video into your preferred video editing software and then convert it into friendly formats.

Both waterproof digital cameras are featuring 12-megapixel shooting and have the same CCD sensor size. But the ISO of TS1 goes up to 6400 when it is only 1600 for D10. A difference that really matters is the wider-angle lense of TS1, which is an effective focal length zoom of 28mm-128mm f/3.3-f/5.9, where D10 is only 35mm-105mm f/2.8-f/4.9. Color reproduction through the Leica lens of TS1 is far better than that of D10. Moreover, the TS1 lean to autofocus underwater with greater ease in comparison with D10.

Just in case you are not a professional scuba photo shooter, the benefits of toughcams can also be realized when you are taking your kid’s bath time photos without worrying about getting your camera wet or shooting with unclean hands while you are in the middle of a barbecue, or anything like that. Whatever happens, you will always have the freedom to use the camera in a wet environment with more convenience. So the conclusion is, if you care about form factor, you should go with Panasonic Lumix TS1, Powershot D10 will be tough to fit it into a pants pocket without some serious bulging. But if you usually go deeper than 3 meters underwater, you should go with Canon Powershot D10.

Panasonic Lumix - what is the difference, if any, between cameras named xxxEB and xxxA?

I've already driven myself more than slightly batty going round and round on that decision!!

I hate feeling buyer’s remorse and typically read through a lot of reviews before making purchases. I spotted this camera at Best Buy and fell in love with its wide angle lens, large crisp display, and powerful zoom. The other similarly priced cameras on display couldn’t hold a match to it.

I came home and looked it up on Amazon, and was knocked over by how many people loved this camera. So I bought it, and have to add my own positive review. I took it with me on a 3 month trip to Ukraine, and love the shots it took, especially of the architecture. It was nice to get a whole building in the frame without having to back up extremely far.

People love the blue color too…really stands out against all the silver models out there.

It’s great to buy something and not feel like you made a mistake. Everyone that’s tried my camera has been impressed with the quality and has asked me where I bought it.

Not a great camera but produces rich, but soft contrasting photos. Zoom lens is sensitive but have to work patiently with it. Very easy camera to use, solidly built. Downloads photos to computer very quickly without installing another worthless program. Flash is kind of weak and i have to recharge the battery often.
I like to experiment but anything over ISO 400 & there’s a noise factor, however,
overall I am very pleased with this camera.

I was so disappointed with the picture quality of this camera during the first few months of use and I did not use it much at all. Then it dawned on me to look for a firmware update. I applied v1.2 update to the TZ5 and that made all the difference. Now I carry this camera with me everyday and use it all the time even though I have several DSLRs. Wow, I also missed a gem.

Panasonic needs to get with the program and get the firmware right in the first place. This is my only grip with Panasonic camera products. It is my understanding that they are not supporting many of their products with firmware updates (about one for the FZ30). Any company should write several firmware updates for every model. Do they think that we are going to throw money at them every year or so just because they have poor support.

I have a dSLR and wanted a point and shoot to carry with me at all times and one that would be easy and fun to use for my husband – one that wouldn’t have too many intimidating settings but that would produce good results. I LOVE this little camera. He can set it on IA (Intelligent Auto) and get good pictures 95% of the time. (Panasonic has since come out with an updated version with very similar features and I imagine I would love that one too.)

What I particularly like about this camera:
True wide angle:
What does that mean? It means you can get a full group of people in a shot without having to back up so far that they look like ants or you can’t really see their faces. It also means that you can get closer to buildings, if you like to take architectural shots, and get more of the building in from closer = better view of the building and its details. Basically you can get closer to whatever you are shooting, get more of the item in the photo and still see it. Very nice for sweeping landscapes on vacation too!

Great zoom
Combine the fabulous zoom with the awesome wide-angle and you get a fantastic range in one small camera body

Zoom with video!!
No one talks about this but most small cameras don’t give you the ability to zoom while you are using the video. (check it out) This one does a great job and I really, really like/need this feature. It’s much smoother to zoom from the camera than to walk closer once the video is running. So, let me repeat – ZOOM WITH VIDEO :) )

Very nice image quality.
It’s not a dSLR but I didn’t expect that. I can get very nice images straight out of the camera and I can give it to my mom, my husband, a complete stranger, set it to IA or whatever setting I want and get a nice picture.

Tons of settings
The menu gives you the ability to choose from tons of pre-sets like landscape, macro, pets, snow, fast burst, etc. It has two menu selections to you can set them to the two you use most frequently and it makes it even faster and more convenient to change if you want to.

Great IA
Use the Intelligent Auto setting and the camera will even change to macro mode for you! It works fabulously.

Relatively fast first click and next click
Very acceptable (meaning low) delay from start up to first click and from one click to the next. Plus, you can set it to the fast burst setting if you want to shoot several pictures in a row very quickly.

Other:
Leica lens with a Panasonic affordable price!
Image stabilization!

I love this little camera and would buy it (or the newer version) again!

Its a great camera for the wide angle, the zoom, the quality of video… I really recomend it.

The only negative point of view is the weight, it is a little bit heavy, but i prefer the other qualities than the size.

I recently bought and have used my new Panasonic Lumix camera; it is without a doubt, one of the most IDEAL cameras I have ever used! Wait until you see the NIGHT SHOTS this guy can take; I’ve had several other digital cameras and this is by far and away the easiest and most compact to use, as well as the BEST for night photos ever! Thanks so much.
