Even if you’ve got a wide angle lens, it’s hard to squeeze everything into the frame and do the scene justice.

To pack more into the picture, photographers traditionally use the trick of shooting several frames, shifting the camera’s position to capture different parts of the scene. These shots are combined to create one extra-large image. However it’s a fiddly manual process that demands skill and patience to stitch frames together without obvious joins.

Now there’s a fun, easy way to create seamless, ultra-wide pictures with a huge field of view of up to 224 degrees. Even at the lowest horizontal panoramic setting you’ll get a field of view of 108 degrees: that’s equivalent to a wide angle lens with a focal length of just 14mm.

Sweep Panorama takes the hard work out of creating fabulous panoramic shots. And best of all, you don’t need a PC or special software: Sony Cybershot DSC-S85 Camera everything’s done for you inside the camera.

Exclusive to Sony, Sweep Panorama is featured on the Cyber-shot™ WX1, TX1 and HX1. They’re the world’s first compact cameras that automatically capture and combine a high-speed burst of full-resolution images.

Just press the shutter button and sweep the camera from left to right across your scene. It also works vertically, letting you sweep the camera up and down to capture tall buildings in a single, dramatic image. The ultra-fast EXMOR CMOS sensor inside the camera shoots a rapid burst of frames at a speed that many sophisticated SLR cameras can’t match. Frames are then stitched together automatically inside the camera: the whole process takes just three seconds.

Standard Wide mode captures dramatic panoramic shots with detail-packed 4912 x 1080 pixel resolution (40:9 ratio). If you want an even bigger field of view, choose Ultra-wide mode and capture amazing 60:9 images with 7152 x 1080 pixels. You can also hold the camera vertically (in portrait position) and shoot extra-tall panoramas in standard (16:9) or ultra-wide (32:9) modes.

Bought this for my girlfriend to replace her Nikon Coolpix because sand & digital cameras don’t mix. She took the Nikon to the beach & got sand in the lens mechanism & it never recovered from that indecent exposure…

Back to the Sony. It’s a good point & shoot camera. Not too fancy & very easy to use. I have the DSC-S650 (older model) & like it a lot. The S950 is very much the same with a higher mega pixel rating. Shots are crisp & clear with auto adjustment, which I use almost exclusively, so this setting “should” consistently produce good results. Can’t always say that about the subject matter though…

The video mode is always a nice feature but it does have its limitations. You can’t zoom in or out while you are in this setting. You can, however, zoom in while in the still photo mode & then switch to video afterwords using that last zoom setting. Most people don’t know this little trick.

Probably the only downside is the battery. The S950 uses Sony’s proprietary (expensive) battery. You’ll need to purchase an extra Sony battery for the S950 if you use it a lot & don’t have the charger, or don’t have time to charge the one battery. Remember to check the charge status so you don’t end up with a dead battery when you need your camera the most for that graduation, wedding or bachelorette party, right girls?

Last comment is you should get at least a 2G memory stick at time of purchase. Just like with computers, you can never have too much memory for your camera, especially if you get hooked on taking videos…

I just got this camera today and so far it is is an okay camera. I’ve been feeling camera-handicapped these past few weeks so when there was a sale at staples offering this camera at $97 i decided, why not? I had been meaning to get one because i broke my other camera, which was a samsung s600. ALso, take note that i am not really a professional photographer. More like a point and shoot sort of gal. Although i will in the future invest in an slr of some sort.

ANYWAYS, I will be updating this post over the time i have it and if after two days i find it adequate, i’ll keep it. Otherwise it goes back to the store.

NOTE: i also have yet to try this out in natural lighting.

PROS:
*Clarity; this camera, with its 10.1mp is quite nice in comparison to my previous camera, a samsung s600 (@6.1mp). I immediately noticed how much more brighter and clear and defined my pictures came out to be. With flash anyways.

*i’m finding the macro option helpful, as well as the steady focus feature.

CONS:
*Without flash and in lowlight situations, it takes, realllly terrible pictures, with lots of noise, and plenty of blur.

*When viewing pictures on it, they take a lot longer to load then they did on my samsung.

*I tried out the video recording feature, and unlike my samsung, the mic is absollutely dreadful at picking up sounds. Even if you put it up to a speaker, it’s just a faint hint of noise in the background when you play it back.

That’s it so far…i will update more soon.

I was at walmart this morning and saw this same camera for $129.00. I haven’t bought this camera so I don’t know how it operates but if you intend to buy it check out your local Wally World first.

Small and easy to carry. Picture quality good. The only problem is that the display on the screen is very dark(i guess i need to adjust the settings) but when transferred to laptop the pictures come out very nicely.
PIctures at night also very good and clear.
Video is of good quality. I was able to capture fireworks at night through video.
Zoom is not that high but its ok for personal use.

I decided to buy this camera after having a bad experience with the Kodak EasyShare M1033 10MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Zoom (Bronze). I figured Sony wouldn’t dissapoint. I mean, they make very good products. Anyway, this camera impressed me with how it looked. It had a nice silver, shiny, metal-like finish.

I turned it on and it had a nice picture, especially on the “Easy Mode”. The flash is excellent and can light up a subject in even a gloomy room. The camera even has special effects, such being able to takes pictures in black and white. The camera is easy to use. The dials are idiot proof because it indicates each mode. You don’t have to go through a ton of menus to figure out the feature. It wouldn’t matter to me, but for some, that could be an issue. Everything seemed to be great. This camera seemed to be a keeper.

I then decided to record video. The resolution on the camera was OK. I also don’t like the fact the movie resolution is fixed. You cannot change it. What made things worse is I recorded a video onto YouTube and couldn’t hear very much, despite turning the camera’s volume to the max. How does it sound? Picture trying to watch your TV with the volume on very low! That is what it was like. I also seen some YouTube videos on this camera. One person mentioned this same issue. For some, that wouldn’t be a big deal. For me, it was a major issue. Can’t shoot video with no sound.

Due to the video issues, I took the camera back for a Fujifilm Finepix J38 12MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Zoom and 2.7 inch LCD. Overall, if you are not big on video, this camera is excellent. If you want good video, this camera is definitely not for you.

I bought this camera for the many features, and the nice lens it has. Unfortunately, it won’t take my brand new 1gb card from sony. I also tried my 1gb psp card and it won’t work.
The famous c:13:01 error comes up.
there’s a 128 mb (old out of production)card that might work, but the cheapest is about $40, and is not even new.
You can’t buy a new one either, since they’re not made anymore, like I said.

I got this camera as a gift 4 years ago and it’s seen a lot of use since then. This was a great first time camera. I took wonderful pictures with its automatic settings and even better ones once I learned how to adjust them to the scene.
Currently I’m upgrading. While I love this camera, there are much better prospects on the market now.
This camera has downsides that come with age:
-Size & weight are too much. It easily gets in my way.
-Turn on time and delay between pictures have both made me miss many spur of the moment shots
-Battery is big and obsolete. My biggest problem right now is I can’t find the charger and if this camera only used AAs it wouldn’t be such a big deal. When I can charge the batteries, they don’t last very long. I always need to carry two fully charged ones if I’m going to be out for a day.

Still, this camera taught me a lot about digital photography with just playing around with it. I don’t think I’d have picked anything else that was out there 4 years ago.

If you’re in the market for a digital camera, there has never been a better time to buy. The high tech electronics marketplace is absolutely glutted with digital cameras; nifty features and consumer options are way up, and prices are way down. Currently available digital camera models cover the resolution range from less than one megapixel to almost eight megapixels. An average user really only needs 4mp as this is great quality for enlargements up to 11 X 14. Many newer cameras on the market are overrun with too bells and whistles that make it difficult to find a camera that takes truly great pictures consistently. The DSC-S85 does just that, great pictures consistently and with no problems. I have had my camera for 2 years and never had any issues with blurring or poorly lit photos. The settings are straight forward and the camera is easy to use.
The DSC S85 has a Carl Zeiss Vario Sonnar 3X zoom lens, an accurate auto focus system, an optical view finder, and a 1.8-inch LCD display, all in a compact package that looks and performs like an upscale 35mm point and shoot. The 4.1 megapixel CCD provides superb images (2272×1704 pixels) that actually get pretty close to the resolution of a scanned 35mm negative (3000×2000 pixels) giving digital photographers excellent image quality.

Miner December 14, 2009 at 12:41 am

This was my first digital camera, I’ve had it since 2001 and have taken over 3,000 pictures with it. The image quality is excellent, My biggest complaint is that the auto focus is sometimes erratic. I’ve had pictures sometimes end up out of focus for no reason, and it’s not always obvious looking at the display. Battery life is good. Camera has a good selection of manual features, Auto white balance setting consistantly gives great results, Build quality is excellent, The shutter lag is slow compaired to newer cameras. A very good camera at it’s time, Image quality is as good as most newer P&S cameras.
