I’ve owned 20 digital cameras and this is the second most frustrating camera I’ve owned. In perfect outdoor settings with huge ample lighting this camera routinely fails to auto-focus. I’ve reset the camera, tried every different setting (and yes I actually know what the settings do) and it just doesn’t work right. When it takes good pictures, they look great, but I end up taking five times as many pictures as needed to get maybe one good one. The auto focus is also one of the slowest I’ve seen. Just a disappointment.

The video camcorder (720p HD camcorder) is why I use this camera at this point. If it wasn’t for that, it’d already be gone on Craigslist after less than six months.

I have been using this camera for more than a year. Before explaining the issue that I experienced recently, a few points below:
pros:
- good picture quality in environment with enough light (unlike some of the other reviewers think). vivid and vibrant color. I have at least 2 cameras that I can compare: Olympus 7010 and Canon SLR 450D. Much better focus and picture than Olympus and almost comparable with Canon 450D.
- very good HD video performance including sound quality.
- no focusing issues (to me this is a positive feature. many other cameras have focusing problems including Canon SLR 450D)
- quality case material

cons:
- weak flash
- noisy pictures in dark (although I saw much worse cameras from noise perspective)
- awkward soft buttons on touch screen and bad menu management
- not reliable (see below)
- battery life

After using one year (unfortunately almost 1 week after warranty expired) the camera started to virate when it is powered on. It is not posible to stop it and take a picture. From my research, I found out that the the DSC-T20 models have the same desigh flaw but Sony fixed them for free. But for this model, it seems Sony is not taking any action (at least as of today). So, please be aware of this issue and make your homework before buying this camera although, to me, it is a nice looking camera with good picture quality.

Hi!!, I just bought this cam and I really like it, good pics, but anyway I have a problem, when I want to make a video, the cam shows me a message saying that the “NEW memory stick” don’t have space, is telling is full, how in the heck could this be true when the memory stick is brand new (2gb), anybody had this problem, please help me with this…..could the cam be damaged???, I’m able to take pictures and the memory works great but when I’m doing videos gives me the message I wrote above……..worst….I lost my bill of the guarantee LOL

Alex January 2, 2010 at 2:43 am

good quality, this camera is well built, crystal clear picture indoor or outdood, recomended for both novice and pro.

Crawford January 2, 2010 at 4:03 am

Just a Brief:
Pro’s
Great video performance as promised
Pretty good pictures
Looks sexy of course
Wide touch screen looks and works good

Cons:
Very short battery life
only way for connectivity is through the dock (no direct usb/hdmi)
Dependant on the Dock
Touch screen isn’t bad, actually pretty good, but could be better
No smile shutter ( I don’t care but you might)
For some reason sometimes pictures come out blurry
poor performance in low light

Some thoughts:
The HD recording is awesome but I think if your in it 100% for the HD recording capabilities, a good substitute would be the kodak zi8 in this price range, which is a mini camcorder that can record FULL 1080P HD Video, which can also take pictures at 5 Megapixils resolution. Although even though this camera’s video quality probably isn’t as good as the kodak zi8, for me it’s a better balance of still picture features and HD recording. If you take lengthy videos I would absolutely go for the kodak zi8, i think that has hours and hours of recording while this is sub 1 hour.

On the Cons, this camera really does have bad battery life, you’d probably have to be very concious to turn it off when not actively using it. Also I don’t like that fact that it’s so dependant on the included dock that connects via usb to your computer. I wish it AT LEAST charged the camera while plugged into the computer, but if you plugged it in and accidentally left it there for an hourish you would have to charge it for 3 hours again.

It also has poor low light video and picture processing, making the pictures look grainy and doesn’t do real life color tone justice.

Conclusion:
Overall I think people critique this camera too harshly being that it was like around $400 or something retail when it was first released and I think people have forgotten that it’s now dipped to around $250. It really isn’t as bad as a camera as some reviewers make it seem. This is a great camera but performance can be shifty, so if you want a more reliabaly consistant performance still picture camera, look to the sony w290, if you want something for HD recording, get the kodak zi8, if you want common ground and will sacrifice sometimes inconsistant low light performance, GET THIS CAMERA

or just chalk out 100 more for the t900 or t9 and most of the cons will be fixed

If you want a camera that’s small, simple, and easy…this is it! It takes great photos and has several different functions you can choose from. This a good little camera for people who love taking pictures. There’s nothing extremely fancy about it, it’s just a good quality camera for regular everyday picture taking.

I purchased this camera because I liked the quality of photos in different lighting. It takes great pics in the dark and inside without that dark background your usually find in other brands. I love the auto features on this camera. It automatically knows what type of lighting you are in need of without selecting anything. It even fits in my pocket; I love the slim, compact design. The only draw backs to the camera are the lack of zoom ability and taking action pictures (of course that could be contributed to the user..me). Great value, especially through Amazon!

We bought this camera for our daughter for her birthday as she wanted something smaller than her old Canon DSC. This little camera is amazing. It is easily carried in a pocket and produces great photos and HD videos (720p). She loves this camera and as a photography enthusiast using Canon digital SLRs, I have been very impressed with it’s performance. The touch screen menu system is intuitive, and works well. As long as you don’t have a problem with using a Sony Memory Stick instead of a SD card, you will love it!

Garbanzo January 2, 2010 at 7:52 am

Purchased for my niece and I am amazed with the quality of the pictures, specially when there is low light or even night time. Like very much the features of the camera but the only sort of negative issue I have is the battery life which is not bad but it is not great.

Fresquez January 2, 2010 at 9:07 am

There are many cool features on this camera. It is a bit spendy but worth every cent!!

Alcorn January 2, 2010 at 9:45 am

I ordered this camera after I had experienced disastrous results with an Olympus point and shoot camera (12 mega pixels at fine setting to get a halfway decent picture).

Some people say that the menu on this camera is confusing or awkward. I didn’t really find that. Once I had set my preferences, I have had no call to alter them since. Pictures are very clear and sharp. I did find the lens cover a little different to deal with at first, but now I am used to it.

I cannot really comment upon how good or bad the battery life is as I have not really subjected it to sustained use, or, a long video session.

I am not really a “photo buff” but this camera has exceeded my expectations in regard to quality and ease of use. It does everything that I want it to do and more. I just wish I had never wasted my money on the Olympus to begin with.

The only con with this camera is that you really do need to purchase extra memory (but this is not confined to Sony; most camera makes are the same). It arrives with enough memory to take a few pictures. I already had compatible memory and once I installed it I was told that I had enough capacity to take 10,000 pictures at 3 mega pixels. I haven’t yet worked out how many battery charges will be needed to achieve that!

Bottom line; I can’t speak highly enough about this camera. Most camera reviews in this class are mediocre at best and obviously you get what you pay for; but for a non-professional who wants a camera that takes good pictures in a variety of situations, then this is probably a camera worthy of further investigation.

Ebner January 2, 2010 at 11:32 am

I really enjoy my new camera with all it’s features. I was looking for a good camera that was small enough to carry in my pocket, yet powerful enough to provide me with good quality and many good features. The Sony Cyber-shot has done just that.

Mount January 2, 2010 at 12:11 pm

I was impressed by Amazon pricing, but these headphones are not good. They are treble heavy, simply put they sound shrill to me. There is no bass whatsoever and when i replaced them with Apple ipod touch headphones, i was feeling much better. They have mentioned some warm up stuff, but thats not useful at all. Not at all recommended

Greenberg January 2, 2010 at 1:02 pm

I purchased it through here, I read all information about it even rated from those people who purchased too. I was a little bit doubt because my oldest sony cybershot was good, not the best but unfortunately it was stolen. I got casio exilim, i did like it but it was really not my type. So I finally made a decision and i did purchase it here.:) I got it today and i loved it already. That Sony Cyber-shot T90 is the number six of all in all digital cameras report. No wondering, it is totally like no other. Its all POSITIVE. Negative is not there as I looked around it. You should purchase and play with it. you would say the same :)

Mota January 2, 2010 at 2:05 pm

I liked the sleek black design. I didn’t have to feel out of place whipping out a pink camera while wearing a military uniform. I didn’t like how my purse pocket would turn it on by itself from my movement. Was bummed a couple of times with a dead battery and missed some vacation photos. I opted for charging fully two batteries so I could load a fresh one if that happened. The batteries are easy to charge and swap out. Euro power cables are available as an accessory purchase. I was able to find memory cards that took hundreds of photos, but a second memory stick would have come in handy in Rome and places that I really loved to take pictures. I am an avid scrapbooker and can easily take over 500 photos in a one week vacation. We got around it by downloading some photos onto a laptop for safekeeping, then wiping the memory card clean for another run of pictures. I loved how fast it came on, which came in handy when taking pictures of my terrier who never sat still. I could use video stills to create pictures of her because she was just toooooo fast for the lens. It takes video and can record alot. I was able to make this camera an integral part of my lifestyle. I am in love with this camera. With newer model designs it can only get better from here. Sony knows what they’re doin’!!!

I am very surprised that at my first purchase, i have been cheated by the sending company which have put SOME KIND OF WRONG battery charger in the pack.
How dare can they remove the original Sony Battery Charger and insert an unidentified kind of useless charger ?
Who is responsible for that?
I have paid my money to Amazon, and i want a clrarification from Amazon…
I have been in all photo shops and camera retailers in Austin,TX and almost everybody told me that this is commonly made by the senders.
A Battery Charger costs arond 59-60 usd in Austin.
Please advise what to do, should i return the whole set ?
I could not make the camera work yet, and i am walking around all the shops to get a help every week end.

This camera is the best I’ve brought in a Long time. The facial reconition and smile reconition is the best technology I’ve ever seen.
